For the past several years GLBT people have been quietly buying affordable homes in the greater Inwood community. Located just northwest of Oak Forest, the Inwood area is comprised of many established, well maintained neighborhoods where the homes are much larger than those of the Heights and Oak Forest. Driving north on TC Jester or Antoine the first Inwood area neighborhoods one will find are Candlelight Oaks, Candlelight Oaks Village and Forest West. Driving just a little further north, is Oaks of Inwood and Inwood Forest. Nestled in between are several other beautiful neighborhoods like Forrest Lake Townhomes, Antoine Forest Estates and Sheraton Oaks.
Until recently the area fell off the radar of many but that is all changing. The re-development of Antoine is getting off the ground with multi-million dollar investments to completely refurbish several apartment communities. The Near Northwest Management District in partnership with the Houston-Galveston area council is completing a livable center study. Mayor Annise Parker through the urban land institute also picked the Antoine corridor as a revitalization case study and has already torn down several worn down apartment complexes. The Greater Inwood Partnership continues to maintain the areas esplanades and worked to the get the White Oak Bayou trail extension to link Inwood neighborhoods to Oak Forest and downtown. The trail is now under construction and will be completed soon. Lone Star College is completing the construction of their new Victory center campus near the entrance to Inwood Forest and just west of Oaks of Inwood on Victory. And the city of Houston has purchased the Inwood Forest golf course and through various partnerships will turn the land into park space and flood water detention.
